Synopsis

Sunshine Daydream is a concert film starring the Grateful Dead. On a blistering summer day in 1972, the Grateful Dead took the stage on the grounds of the Oregon Country Fair in Veneta, Oregon. for what would become one of the most legendary concerts of the band’s storied history. Considered to be the Merry Pranksters last "Acid Test", the concert offers a snapshot of the band at the peak of its playing prowess. The setlist that day included memorable performance of "Sugaree, " "Deal, " "Black-Throated Wind, " "Greatest Story Ever Told, " "Bird Song" and a mind-melting version of "Dark Star" that stretches over 30 minutes. The show, which was recorded and filmed but never released, has since become the most-requested live show in Grateful Dead history. A digitally remastered and reedited official version of the film was released on DVD and Blu-ray on September 17, 2013.

Missed the anniversary of this at the end of last month because I have awful memory and decided I'd just wait for another reason to watch it and now that my HDD is dead(?) and I'm still just desperate to see lots of movies I figured why not
Probably my favourite stand alone Dead show, definitely a shame that this doesn't include all of the performances from that day but at the same time I've almost no doubt that this could lose just how tight yet expansive this feels. Really tempted to give it a rare 4.5 on the basis of everyone being in their absolute top form but I do dislike how long the soundcheck set up is and I have fo enforce unrealistic standards. Has the GREATEST Bird Song and Dark Star of all time. Love the 8mm and 16mm photography. Definitely one of the greatest concert films I'll ever see.

A great set, if not a great documentary. Killer performances, killer heat, and psychedelic stop motion. One of the last acid tests, organized to help save the Kesey Creamery. I wish this had been shot better and had more footage of the performance. Lots of time spent on the stage build, and interruptive intervals of radio chatter that didn’t fit the general vibe of the performance what so ever. Not sure why early acid test footage is spliced in, did they not capture the other half of this set on film?

They desperately needed better coverage of the band, and our man Keith got shafted all together, with barely any footage of his killer performance. I honestly don’t mind Donna…

Wonderful concert recording from the creamery benefit on August 27 1972. One of the greatest rock concerts in history. Honestly
One of the most important musical moments in history captured on a brilliant concert film. Amazing footage of a bygone era.

If there is a more acid-drenched artifact in the world, from the title on down, I haven't yet found it.

Jerry wasn't the Messiah, or Ganesh, or any of that shit old parking lot Heads swear he was, any more than Lesh was the President of the United States or Weir a nuclear submarine. He was something though. Not the heart, but maybe the pineal gland of the whole operation; he sensed things—light, dark, the movement of magnetic fields—and transmitted them directly into melody via those stubby and mutilated tar-stained hands. Jerry wasn't Christ, but there is footage of him ascending multiple times from a dusty Oregon field.

72 being my favorite Dead year, this is a delight, the weird raggedy amateur touches only adding to its (surprisingly rich, documentary) sense of the moment.

Did one of the finest "Dark Star"s ever performed really need images of a manatee with human lips? The jury's still out.

I think I can confidently say that the sets from ‘72 are peak Dead, not to say that 73, 77, and 89/90 don’t also have some of the best live work ever. There’s something really special about the construction of set lists and the balance of 12 minute jams and shorter tracks that are more “faithful” to their studio counterparts that act as a good intermission for the more extended cuts. Everyone is on their A-game during this whole set and it shows.

    Movie 3 - by stephen

A sweet kinda psychedelic live which gets way too psych-y after a point, but is enjoyable and easy to listen. Sometimes it gets kinda too much, but it is enjoyable. Didn't loose my shit and I have never listened to Grateful Dead before, but it was fun.

Simultaneously the best footage of them playing in existence and maybe the best concert they ever played. It's truly insane that this exists.

I never thought I’d really get into this band beyond thinking the skull logo looked pretty cool but here I am.

  • Review by Aaron ★★★★

I find this show to be a little overrated but I get why it is. With all of this footage of the classic 72 lineup, it’s pretty special. Wicked versions of Sugaree, China Cat—>Rider, Bird Song, and Dark Star.
