Nostalgic made for TV rom com. I bet being single in 70s New York was wild. Where can i find a time machine?

This certainly starts out roughly, with a bigoted joke setup that distanced me very early on. Luckily, it’s an outlier in what is mostly a charming movie.
This could be so creepy, as it follows a man trying to get better at picking up women. The logic implies objectification but the joke is firmly on him. It’s a journey of understanding and it loops around — and never pretends not to — just being yourself.
There’s an element of Sex Lies and Videotape, before that film (of course), as the character collects conversations from women about attraction. This fronts a female perspective even if it all feels rather shallow. The central couple, full of will they won’t they, are very endearing, though. Chemistry is good and their back and forths are witty.
There’s a lot of mumbly self deprecation in here, Woody Allen stuff without the narcissism (and without the Woody Allen, and before Woody Allen saturation). Overall, it’s decent.

Review by George Bell ★★★
TV movies in the 1970s almost never attempted romantic comedy, which makes How to Pick Up Girls a rare delight. The setup is the epitome of romcom tropes: Donald, a hayseed from the Midwest, moves to New York to room with Robby, an old buddy who is now a swinging bachelor in the 1970s Big Apple. Robby takes Donald under his wing to teach him the basics of meeting and seducing young women in a sunny, not yet gentrified Greenwich Village where young Venuses seem to be strolling down every street. Of course, there is also a lovely young woman literally next door who is perfect for the hayseed once he becomes predictably disillusioned by the mad, no-commitment singles scene…

This started off kind of shaky but ended up being a sweet little comedy with a touch of romance.
