HENRY TOEWS
It is with love and sadness that we announce the passing of Henry Toews on Sunday, March 12, 2023, aged 89 years of age.
Henry is survived by Elizabeth, his loving wife of over 25 years; as well as his children, Joanne (Gerald) Hildebrand, Teresa (Murray) Froese, Timothy (Andrea), and Mark (Melissa), his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Henry was predeceased by his wife Eunice in 1968, his wife Margaret in 1994, and his son Peter, who was stillborn in 1971.
Henry was born in the village of Gnadenthal, Manitoba in 1933, and grew up in Steinbach. After University he began a lengthy and influential teaching career working in various schools throughout Manitoba. In 1976 the family moved from The Pas to Kandern, Germany where he assumed the role of Administrative Director of Black Forest Academy, an international private Christian school. In 1992 he accepted a position with Association of Christian Schools International, centered in Budapest, Hungary. Henry continued to serve in Eastern Europe with his wife Elizabeth until 2001, when they returned to Winnipeg.
Henry lived a full and meaningful life and will be remembered for his deep and unwavering Christian faith, his love for the church, his dedication to service, and his love and commitment to his spouse and family.
A celebration of his life will take place at McIvor Mennonite Brethren Church, 200 McIvor Avenue, Winnipeg, on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. Interment at St. Paul's Anglican Cemetery. The service will be livestreamed.

We met and shared with Henry, Margaret and Elizabeth during the decades of the 90's and early 2000's. The foundation of the ACSI Europe office in 1993 was the occasion where we visited Budapest and then met every year at our executive staff meetings in different locations. My memories from Henry are of a mature and determined leader, fearless to introduce Christian education beyond the recently fallen Iron Curtain. He put solid foundations to a work that continues today and is celebrating 30 years of blessed ministry. The short obituary on this page does not make full justice of the many ways in which Henry contributed to the advancement of God's kingdom. Only eternity will tell of the hundreds, even thousands of lives that were touched, directly or indirectly, by his resolve to follow God's call. - Posted by: Stuart & Sheny Salazar (Colleagues at ACSI) on: Apr 06, 2023

My deepest condolences to the family of esteemed teacher Henry Toews. Mr. Toews was one of my first mentors beginning in high school when he went out of his way to encourage my vying for a role in a stage play and then again after I, too, became a teacher when he got me involved in teachers' association activity. His belief in my talents/abilities were the springboard for what would become my continuing involvement in community service/volunteering for the rest of my life...I consider myself truly blessed to have crossed paths with such a great teacher-mentor whose faith in me has stayed with me always. Not only is Mr. Toews remembered for his mentorship, he may have actually 'saved my life' on a couple of occasions such as when some acid spilled on my skirt in Chem Lab and he came to my rescue with an antidote before the acid touched my skin, and then again when he knew to saw off a small ring I'd put on a thick finger causing the finger to swell thereby making it impossible to slip off the ring...I am so glad I got to thank him for all these gestures when our high school graduating class had a 50-yr reunion not many years ago and also to give him a hug for all these well-remembered favours! Mr. Toews, may you have an eternally peaceful repose with your loved ones who have gone before you (and with another of your former students/my fellow classmate and later teaching colleague Art Reimer who passed away on the very same day/the fortuitousness of this chance fact is quite extraordinary!) My condolences to Henry's family. We worked together when he was principal of Margaret Barbour Collegiate Institute in The Pas from 1970-76. His quiet demeanor, friendliness and sincere interest in his principalship responsibilities was recognized by his administrator colleagues. - Posted by: Vaughn Wadelius (former principal colleague) on: Mar 18, 2023
